Diagnosis starts with a clear history and physical exam. Your doctor may order X-rays to check joint space and bone changes, blood tests to look for inflammation or antibodies (like rheumatoid factor or anti-CCP), and sometimes ultrasound or MRI for early damage. A rheumatologist can help when the diagnosis is unclear or when treatment needs to be stronger.

Manage pain and stay active

Keep moving. Low-impact activities—walking, swimming, cycling—reduce stiffness and protect joints. Strength training for the muscles around a joint gives better support and lowers pain. Balance activity with rest: short, frequent breaks beat long bed rest. Use heat to relax stiff joints and cold packs for new swelling or sharp pain.

Over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen and NSAIDs (ibuprofen, naproxen) help many people. Topical NSAIDs and creams can work well for hand or knee pain with fewer systemic effects. For inflammatory arthritis such as RA, doctors use disease-modifying drugs (DMARDs) like methotrexate and, when needed, biologic medicines to slow disease and prevent damage. Always follow your prescriber's instructions and get regular monitoring when on these drugs.

Everyday tools make a difference: jar openers, long-handled shoe horns, and raised toilet seats reduce strain. Losing even a small amount of weight eases knee and hip pressure. Mind your sleep and manage stress — both affect pain perception. Some people try supplements like glucosamine or omega-3s; results vary, so talk to your doctor before starting any new supplement.

See a doctor if pain limits daily tasks, causes ongoing swelling, or comes with fever, rapid joint change, or loss of function. Track which activities, foods, or weather patterns affect your pain — that helps your provider tailor treatment. Small, steady changes often add up to big improvements in comfort and mobility.
